Digitalization and Human Resource Management Innovation in Nigerian Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises: Impact on Employee Engagement and Performance

Abstract- In today’s digital age, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria face significant challenges in adapting to the rapidly changing business landscape. This study explores the impact of digitalization and HRM innovation on employee engagement and performance in Nigerian SMEs. This research reveals that digitalization and HRM innovation can significantly enhance employee engagement and performance in Nigerian SMEs. This study also provides valuable insights for SMEs, policymakers, and HR practitioners seeking to leverage digitalization and HRM innovation to improve employee engagement and performance in Nigerian SMEs. The data for this study were collected from secondary sources, including the annual reports of Nigerian SMEs, the websites of Nigerian SMEs etc analyzed to gather information on their HRM practices, employee engagement initiatives, and performance management systems, the social media platforms of Nigerian SMEs, industry reports and research studies on digital transformation, HRM innovation, and employee engagement in Nigerian SMEs analyzed to gather information on best practices and trends. The study adopted qualitative descriptive analysis which is an aspect of content analysis as method of data presentation and analysis. The paper found out among others that Nigerian SMEs should develop digital literacy programs to equip employees with the necessary skills to effectively utilize digital technologies. The study also recommends among others that Nigerian SMEs should provide regular training and development programs to help employees develop new skills and adapt to changing job requirements. Conclusively, as Nigerian SMEs continue to navigate the complexities of the digital age, it is imperative that they prioritize digitalization and HRM innovation to remain competitive and achieve their strategic objectives.
